Skritter Update

dfoxworthy   December 16th, 2011 2:57a.m.

Just curious, did you guys just update the stroke recognition? I suddenly find it much smoother and fluid than before. Just wondering if I'm not crazy...

Kawe   December 16th, 2011 5:17a.m.

I read and were like... "he's just imagining things". then I started doing my daily exercises and man... holy crap!

junglegirl   December 16th, 2011 9:17a.m.

Yeah, I agree, skritter is amazingly fluid today. I noticed that my browser (Firefox) seemed to have updated this morning so I wondered if that had something to do with it.

I'll be interested to try it out on my laptop at home, which is usually much slower than my computer at work.

nick   December 16th, 2011 10:24a.m.

We release all the beta stuff to the live site on the 15th when the newsletter goes out. Ideally we would have more people on the beta site so that one of you would have said this when I actually made the change that did it. Now I'm scratching my head as to what I changed in the last month...

What browsers do y'all have?

Kawe   December 16th, 2011 1:20p.m.

I'm running Chrome.

The new update is amazing imo.

What I think it could be is that the strokes seem more precise. Before you could draw exactly how it looked but you wouldn't get it cause it seemed as if the recognition wanted uuhh.. more mechanical strokes than the ones shown.

dfoxworthy   December 16th, 2011 2:14p.m.

I'm on Chrome. Yes, more precise, feels like when buy a new nice pen.

nick   December 16th, 2011 2:53p.m.

Interesting. Can you please confirm that it's a Skritter change by trying this on November's release?

dbkluck   December 16th, 2011 3:17p.m.

My guess would be that it has to do with the native OS cursors mentioned in http://www.skritter.com/forum/topic?id=132068948

because I used to get a black blob for my writing prompt cursor, but now get a pointer, which sounds like what was being described in that topic. time frame fits too. But I don't know, I don't use beta, I just noticed it today like everyone else.

nick   December 16th, 2011 4:03p.m.

Oh, duh. I thought I put that up for last month's release, but I guess not. I still have it on my to-do list to make it actually use the blob for the native cursor in all cases (there are bugs where it doesn't happen). How many of you are getting the blob vs. just a normal mouse pointer?

icebear   December 16th, 2011 4:25p.m.

I get the blob (always have).

Kawe   December 16th, 2011 4:43p.m.

Well, I tried on that other version and something is definitely different. What I'm noticing is that my strokes seem a little more responsive.

Anyhow, whatever it is.. it is better. haha.

Is there a changelist? Maybe I can figure out what it is.

junglegirl   December 16th, 2011 5:08p.m.

I used to get the blob but as of today I got the pointer (and definitely noticed improvement).

valymer   December 17th, 2011 1:29a.m.

I'm getting improved fluidity, but the blob comes and goes (it's mostly a pointer now) in Firefox 7.0.

Schnabelhund   December 17th, 2011 1:51a.m.

In Firefox on my Ubuntu machine, Skritter crashes very often since yesterday, leaving the canvas completely blank :(

I'm using the November release now. No crashes there!

Edit: Flash is up to date, too.

nick   December 17th, 2011 1:01p.m.

Schnabelhund, try this URL and let me know what happens:

http://www.skritter.com/study/all?ten_point_one=true

Schnabelhund   December 17th, 2011 1:47p.m.

Happens here, too :(

gwiener   December 17th, 2011 2:03p.m.

Me too on Schnabelhund's problem. Blank canvas on Ubuntu machine (64bit) with Flash version 11.2, both on Firefox and Chrome. How do I switch back to the previous release?

nick   December 17th, 2011 2:33p.m.

Can you install the debug version of the Flash player and let me know if there are any errors shown then?

http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

Try this for now: http://3-11.latest.write-way.appspot.com

Catherine :)   December 17th, 2011 6:33p.m.

The blob comes and goes in the latest Firefox and Chrome for me, mostly pointer now, which isn't as good I don't think. I liked the blobs and arrows!

DrGrace   December 17th, 2011 11:38p.m.

The new build consistently crashes Flash in the Photon iPad browser. Ten_point_one works.

Schnabelhund   December 18th, 2011 2:03a.m.

Are there no 64-bit debuggers?

Feiyue Kell   December 18th, 2011 11:50a.m.

wow, I'm loving it, so smooth :)

Dorayaki   December 19th, 2011 1:38p.m.

Same issue here with the canvas completely blank.

I tested on 64bits linux with firefox, opera and also chrome, all the same...

Fortunately I can still write characters on paper ;)

Roberto   December 19th, 2011 4:38p.m.

It starts with the blob, but it remains a blob when going aover the button bar below.

Than with the second character it becomes a standad pointer (and a finger over the buttons).

It is like this since few day; I though youe were aware, but I happened to come over this post and so...here are my 2 cents. I use Vista Home and the latest version of Chrome (10.0.912.63.

janicsar   December 19th, 2011 11:46p.m.

Hi,

anyone had the problem (on slow internet) that the page is working but the ap for writing caracters is not loading?

Thanks!

DrGrace   December 20th, 2011 2:40p.m.

Yes, now even version 10.1 gives me a blank area. Yesterday it was working.

红羽   December 21st, 2011 1:05p.m.

I am also experiencing constant crashing on Firefox with Ubuntu. I even tried installing the Beta Flash version, and that didn't work either: gave a white screen. The http://3-11.latest.write-way.appspot.com/study/all link works fine, though.

Gene   December 29th, 2011 2:55a.m.

Have been away from Skritter for a while and am also having trouble. Both the ".com" site and the ".cn" site don't have a cursor to write with.

This page just shows a blank area where the app should be:

http://www.skritter.com/study/all?ten_point_one=true

This page seems to work, but the cursor movement is choppy, there are cursor trails that look like black dots and don't erase, and the screen doesn't refresh when I move on to the next character:

http://3-11.latest.write-way.appspot.com/study/all?

I'm using Firefox 8.0 on Ubuntu 11.04. I'm also located in China. Any suggestions?

scott   December 29th, 2011 3:31p.m.

Have you updated flash to the latest version? sveitser there suggests that the 32 bit version might work better as well.
