iphone app

mratranslate   December 17th, 2011 5:19p.m.

Hi guys, I was just wondering..the new app looks amazing.
In terms of phones, will it only work on iphones best? or at all?

I would really like to use skritter on the move but don't have an iphone at the moment. Are there any other cheaper phones the app would work with just as well?

Thanks as always
Matt

iPod Touch would be the cheapest way to be able to use it. It will run just on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. (I wouldn't get anything yet until the app is totally launched.)

@mratranslate
The app will work on 'i' devices and, for phones, it will need iPhones 3GS and up. You should be able to pick up an older 3GS cheaper than a new 4S!

Also, it will work on the iPod touch which is basically an iPhone without the phone functions and so would be cheaper. I'm not sure on versions for the iPod, but it is likely that whatever device, it will need to run iOS5.

Another option is an iPad, and there is talk of an iPad specific version coming out at some time in the future - I imagine this will take advantage of the larger screen to show more information, but this is a long way off as yet.

Your other option is to get an Android device that can run flash and you can then access the website as you do with a PC, although you might want to read some of the forum entries about how well that works.

I'd recommend getting an iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4S. Then, besides the Skritter app, you could also use the fantastic Chinese character recognition feature of Pleco. The cameras on the iPod Touch and iPad are not really good enough for this, as they have a low resolution and don't allow macro focus. I use the OCR in Pleco to quickly make large lists of flash cards from the textbooks used in my Chinese lessons, and then I import the flashcard files into Skritter.

I'm alpha testing with last year's model of iPod touch. App works great. I'm sure you could get a used one on eBay. I absolutely love studying with it.

Are any other beta testers getting the "unable to download the application at this time" error? Ever since the last two updates came out I have not been able to download the app. I have tried everything - canceling all my old profiles in the general settings, reseting my iphone, syncing my iphone, re-registering my device all to no avail. Scott or George or anyone have any ideas or also experiencing this problem?

Thanks guys.

Thanks for all the replies! Sounds like a second-hand ipodtouch will be best for me. But I will wait until the app is launched first in case of any further developments. Looks fantastic though! Thanks all, Matt

yechan831, are there any crash logs associated with it?

guys, is there a difference in app performance when using iphone 3gs and iphone 4? Apparently i will have to buy apple device but i would prefer cheaper 3gs option.

thanks!

@mischka82: I'm currently testing the app on my old 3GS, so at least when it's first released, it will run on that phone. However, we can't say for sure how long we'll continue to support the 3GS. Also, it will need to be running iOS 4.3 or higher.
