JLPT lists

skipkent   January 10th, 2012 11:39p.m.

Greetings!

I'm working on the JLPT 4 list and learning a lot, but it seems that the actual JLPT 4 required kanji are there along with lots of (non-JLPT) other kanji for the vocab. Problem (feature?) is that the software treats the vocab kanji just like that actual JLPT 4 kanji, if that makes any sense to anyone.

The short of it is that I'm learning tons of wonderful kanji way beyond JLPT 4, but that's not exactly what I wanted. I'd like to study just the required kanji and the vocabulary in kana.

If I haven't confused everyone with my question, I'd love to hear some feedback. It sounds like I need to create my own list, which is fine if that's the only option.

cheers,

-Kent

For example, while doing a practice just now, I was quizzed on writing the kanji for telephone. While that's a vocab word, I don't believe it's on the list of kanji required for JLPT 4. I could be wrong though.

Either way, loving the software!

Is "Study all kanji in lists" turned off?

I may have misunderstood the question, though.

I don't know if it's giving you advanced kanji or not and I don't know of any other option other than making a separate list for them, but I just wanted to point out that both of the kanji used in denwa (telephone) are on the JLPT 4 kanji list.

Here's a reference:

Do you have another example?

I just got home and looked through the list. You're right; there are lots and lots of kanji included in it that are not on the official JLPT 4 kanji list.

I guess it would be a good idea to make a separate list containing only the listed kanji if someone wants to learn how to write only those. Then they can study the JLPT 4 list in definition/reading only mode to learn the vocabulary.

@skipkent: I checked your account and valymer is exactly right. By default, Skritter honors the wishes of JLPT or textbook lists to teach many words without teaching the kanji. But you have that default behavior ignored with the 'study all kanji in lists' setting enabled here:

http://www.skritter.com/account/settings-study

To get studying without the extraneous kanji, uou'll want to:

1. Turn that setting off
2. Remove the list from your studies
3. Add it again from the beginning, where only the things you need to know for the test will be added this time

This will not remove any progress you've made on the words you've added and worked on already. It will just make sure you don't study any of the kanji you don't need to learn.
