What Stylus?

bennyboyk   May 10th, 2012 8:01a.m.

I'm looking to get a stylus in anticipation for the new iOS app.

I wanted to see what preferences other users had, particularly our Skirtter app beta testers.

I love my Wacom Bamboo pad, but the stylus seems pretty expensive when compared with other brands.

What are your thoughts?

I like being able to use it in one hand so I guess I prefer my finger. The Wacom stylus won't work on the ipod because it uses a different technology. Most of the stylus brands sold in stores are very short you may need to look online to fined a pro version that is the size of a regular pen or pencil. I find the kinds with the round rubber tips work the best.

Edit: Sorry, I should learn to look before I leap, Wacom does offer a stylus for the ipod.

I'm using PogoSketch+ and its served me well for the last 6 months (on both my MacBook track pad and the iPhone). My guess is the tip probably has to be replaced every year or so. The only gripe I have is that the barrel of the pen is pretty skinny, so longer sessions can be uncomfortable, which means I take breaks throughout.

That said, I think the narrow barrel issue would be solved by using the PogoSketch Pro, which has a more substantial form factor. I plan on getting one later this year at the same time as a iPad; will report on its quality when I have the chance.

Also, iFaraday has had some good reviews here and elsewhere; it's Rx series is another I'll consider getting (instead of the PogoSketch Pro).

A little later, we plan to do a big stylus roundup to see what works best for Skritter. Until then, I'll also add that the Griffin stylus I used worked perfectly, also.

I've tried a few. iFaraday RxII is the best I've found -- light touch, little friction, normal writing angle. The basic iFaraday stylus is decent too, but due to the shallower tip, needs to be held upright. Fine for trains, uncomfortable if it's on your desk.

I already wrote something about a stylus before, will copy it here: To me the Wacom Bamboo for iPad/iPhone is the best (and probably the most expensive too),not too thin and not too fat. I tried 4 different types with the new app. Number 2 for the iPad (in my opinion) is the Alupen Just Mobile. In fact, the Alupen is as good as the Wacom Bamboo pen for ipad/iphone,but less suitable if your hands are not big enough. My hands are quite small. The pen is a bit fatter to hold, not to write.
The 2 I didn't like (I will have to look where they are to remember the brands) were both very thin and not so nice to hold. One rubber tip already broke after a couple of hours.
I mostly use a stylus and prefer it to using my finger. When I use my finger, my wrist starts to ache after a while.

@ddapore99: I've been wondering whether the Wacom Bamboo iPad/iPhone stylus can be used on an iPod. So this is really not possible? Or are you talking about the common Wacom stylus that is used for a writing pad? I am talking about the Wacom Bamboo for iPad/iPhone.

I bought a cheap stylus in China while testing the app. But the rubber tip drags on the glass screen and creates friction.

My solution is to buy some cheap chapstick, smear just a tiny bit on the writing portion of the screen, and the stylus glides like a wet ink brush over the glass. I can write so much faster this way.

Thanks guys, now considering the Griffin Stylus or the Pogo Sketch. They are the same price on the UK Amazon store.... hmmm decisions decisions!

@atdlouis very innovative!

I have both the Wacom stylus nd the Alupen along with some others. I like them both. But for use with Skritter on the iPhone, I would choose the Wacom stylus. The Alupen's tip is pretty big and maybe not so great for using Skritter on the iPhone's smaller screen. I love the Alupen for navigating the iPad with its bigger screen. One note about the Wacom stylus though. Not only is it expensive initially ($30) but the nibs wear out and you have to buy them for $5 for a set of three from the Wacom site. You will definitely need some.
