Adding definitions in non-english languages

Kansuke   May 25th, 2012 12:16p.m.

Hi there,
I recently switched to my native language definitions since my teacher requires us to know them exactly as they appear in the script ;/ and it just adds one more layer of complexity to the task if you have to translate japanese->english->polish in your head during the test. However, I changed the Source Language in settings, but I cannot edit the definitions on a saved list. I read somewhere on the forums that I have to save the list first which I did, and when I click a word there is the definition, I write a new one in it's place, but when I press Enter the English one appears again. The only way to permanently change it seems to be editing while the word shows during study which is a pain. What am I doing wrong?

I do this all the time and it works, but I think the list page doesn't get immediately updated when you update the definition via the word popup. If you reload the list page, does it show the new definition?

Nope, I even restarted the browser etc. to no effect :(

Kansuke, what's one of the words that you've edited in this way, from the list page?

Kansuke   May 25th, 2012 6:30p.m.

For example 洋傘 in list "UAM日本学科 4年 Kramm", section "1401-1420". I tried editing it multiple times yet the meaning stays in English. I edited 傘 when the word appeared during study, then the meaning stayed the way I edited it. I didn't try changing most of the rest for now.

So, no ideas? One more thing I noticed: When I go into List->Section->Edit Section (pencil icon)->edit the meaning there (that's the problem, the meaning stays in english), "all definitions" button appears. When I click it, it still lists only 1 english definition, but after clicking "Add word to our database" (which won't work cause it says it's already in) the default meaning is the Polish one which I edited. However it doesn't show in list page nor in study.

It sounds like you're still trying to edit the definition while you're editing the section.

1. Go to the section.
2. Click the word itself, and a popup should show up that shows everything about the word. How well you know it, when it will show up next, related words on the side. Should look something like this:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/48265288/wordpopup.png

3. Click the pencil next to the definition to edit it:

At no point in this process should you click the button that says 'edit section'. Editing lists and editing words are completely separate, because when you edit a word, it affects the word (for you) whenever you encounter it, regardless of the list it's in. Does that make sense?

Ok.

So it seems the problem was that I was going "Main Page -> Vocab Lists -> Made By Me -> list name -> pencil next to the section I wanted to edit", when I should've been going to My Words. That's the only place where I can get the popup you linked to show up. Is this it?
Also, It looks like words appear in My Words only after I've seen them at least once during study, since it shows only 12 for the list which has nearly 300. Is that correct?

One more thing, is there any way to correct the reading of a word after adding it to the database if I made a typo? Can't seem to find one.

The word popup is available in lots of places. It's in My Words, but it's also in the list.

http://www.skritter.com/vocab/listsect?list=126461991&sect=1

Click on the words on the left to get the popup. To get to that page, click the 'contents' tab in the upper right corner here:

http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=126461991

And click the name of the section.

You can also get the popup while studying. Click the magnifying glass in the upper right area of the study page.

Yes, words are added gradually by Skritter so that you're not overwhelmed. Only the ones you have added so far show up in My Words.

If there's a typo, we can fix it, just send us a note about it (click 'content' at the bottom of any page, click 'feedback' while studying). We also look through all new submissions and check things then.

Omg, thanks Scott, I FINALLY know what was going wrong.

I was clicking the words in the list, but on the wrong side of the bar xD Clicking on the right 95% (reading, definition, up to "W D R") will just check the word for Word Actions, and that's why I was wondering "where the hell is this pop-up they're talking about"... Where I should've been clicking just the kanji on the left. Oh my, that's kinda confusing but I'm happy it's finally sorted out ;)

Thanks for help!
