The app doesn't talk to me on iPad

Wendy   June 17th, 2012 5:36a.m.

I've downloaded the new app onto both my iPhone 3GS and iPad 2. The writing on both works beautifully. On my phone, each "flash card" plays a sound file for the word/character after writing it. On my iPad, it won't play the sound file even if I tap the icon for it. I checked the app settings and my iPad settings (other apps are making sounds as expected). I tried deleting and re-downloading the app, but that didn't fix it, either. Has anyone else had this issue?

Yes I had it once in alpha test. I had to restart my device to get it to work again. It where only this app having issue but it did not help to reinstall the app. That is the only time I had that issue though.

My mother solved this, actually!

She has an iPad as well, and she told me that she'd had a similar problem a while back. It seems that there is a new-ish selective mute function in iOS (newer than officially-supported multitasking, anyway). The purpose of it is to let you listen to a media app in the background while automatically muting a non-media app you're actively using. I had tested the Skritter app against Pandora and Netflix, which will only mute if the device is muted. Lo and behold, some different apps were awfully quiet as well. After a quick fix, I can hear the sound file just like on the iPhone.

This site has directions for turning off the selective muting:

She said that, in spite of this unusual role reversal, my days of offering long distance technical support are far from over.

Yeah I'd check that switch toggle along the side of the iPad, it used to be used for screen orientation but now controls volume. I've got an iPad 1st generation and the app plays the sounds properly.

@orz, everyone understood what the poster was communicating. Your post where irrelevant.

Selective muting isn't controlled by the iPad's switch. It's also not controlled in the Settings. Those were the first things I checked. What IS controlled in Settings is the overall volume/mute and exactly what you want the switch to do (orientation lock or overall mute - in my case, I have the switch controlling orientation lock).

To turn on/off selective mute, one needs to double click the Home button and then swipe left to right on the tool bar that pops up. That gets you a sound-specific tool bar, with selective mute on the left and overall mute on the right.

My apologies for basically repeating my second post. It's just that, if someone else is living under a proverbial rock like I apparently do, I don't want them to prematurely decide that the app or their iPad is broken when the obvious solutions don't work.

The Chinese app is beautiful and the writing feels very natural! I can't wait to see the Japanese version :)
