Adding words to ios app for offline use

goobybear   June 21st, 2012 4:36p.m.

When the ios app is on line new words are added automatically as I go. How are words added when I am no longer connected to the internet?

Does the app
1) automatically queue up a bunch of new words while online and will introduce words from the queue while offline?
2) Or do I have to use the green + button to manually add a bunch of words before going offline?

If the answer is 1 then how many words are queued?

If the answer is 2 then will the app space them out as if I were online, or will I be overwhelmed with the app throwing all the words added out at the same time?

2: you should manually add in advance if you're going to go offline and will need new words. It tries to space them out, then, when introducing them, but we haven't tuned that part of the algorithm very much. So if you try that, let us know how it goes in as much detail as you can, and whether it worked well, gave you too few, overwhelmed you, etc.

I've been adding a couple hundred words at a time before going offline and finding it hard to get enough, but I can't test it very well because I was so overpracticed before a few weeks ago that I just chew through them really fast and can't test the more normal use cases.

Before I left for China, I added the maximum of new words allowable to the app. At first it was very overwhelming: Skritter introduced 15 new words in a row. But after that, it seemed to adjust. Overall I've been pleased with it.

It sounds like the algorithms to introduce new words are different between online vs offline.

If I add a hundred new words, go offline and the app only showed me 30 new words, then I re-sync online, will the remaining 70 words that were added remain or will they be flushed and which algorithm take effect when I am back online when introducing the 70 words.

I haven't been able to sync since I added all of those words so I don't know. I'm curious to know the answer as well.
