Bookmarklet with IOS safari.

Is there anyway to use the Bookmarklet with safari in iPad ?

Kai Carver   July 16th, 2012 10:56a.m.

Yes it can be done!

Instructions below, adapted from a bookmarklet tutorial here:
http://iosbookmarklets.com/tutorials/dlvr-it-bookmarklet-for-the-ipad/#more-140

1. From your iPad, go to “Settings” and tap on “Safari”. Set "Always Show Bookmarks Bar" to "ON". Set JavaScript to “ON.” Set "Accept Cookies" to "From visited".

2a. In the Skritter home page, touch the "Bookmarklet" link, then long-touch the "Add to Skritter Bookmarklet", then press the "Copy Link URL" button.

Oops, 2a. only works in the Google Chrome app, which I often use as well as Safari...

2b. Alternatively, copy the text of the bookmarklet another way. I pasted it here: http://pastebin.com/1WA6Nrap

2c. I also put the text of the bookmarklet at the bottom of this post*, but not sure it will remain intact.

3. Touch the share icon (square with a right arrow) at the top of your Safari page and click “Add Bookmark.” Ensure that it will be saving to the “Bookmarks Bar” and then hit “Save.”

4. Tap the bookmark icon (open book) to pull up your bookmarks. Tap the “Bookmarks Bar” folder. Then click “Edit” in the top corner of your window.

5. Select the bookmark that you just created. Change the name to something of your choice, like "Add2Skrit".

6. Erase the URL shown and paste the new code that you copied in step 2 (press and hold, then release, then tap “Paste”).

7. Hit “Bookmarks Bar” located in the bottom top left corner to go back.  Click “Done” located in the top right corner. Click the bookmark icon to make it disappear.

Whew. That worked for me, hope it helps someone else. Now I need to figure out how to do bookmarklets for the Chrome app. These iOS thingies sure are finicky...

*Here's the text of the bookmarklet, not sure it will be left as-is by this forum software:

javascript:(function()%7Btry%7Bvar%20t=((window.getSelection&&document.activeElement&&(document.activeElement.nodeName=='TEXTAREA'%7C%7C(document.activeElement.nodeName=='INPUT'&&document.activeElement.getAttribute('type').toLowerCase()=='text'))&&document.activeElement.value.substring(document.activeElement.selectionStart,document.activeElement.selectionEnd))%7C%7C(window.getSelection&&window.getSelection())%7C%7C(document.getSelection&&document.getSelection())%7C%7C(document.selection&&document.selection.createRange&&document.selection.createRange().text));javascript:window.open('http://www.skritter.com/vocab/api/add?from=bookmarklet&lang=zh&word='+encodeURIComponent(t),'_bookmarklet');%7Dcatch(e)%7B%7D%7D)();
