Great Grammar Reference Book

SGRuixue   July 18th, 2012 5:47a.m.

I am looking for a GREAT grammar reference book that not only has examples but goes into to detail about the different uses of the grammar pattern. I already own Claudia Ross' Modern Chinese Grammar. It does have a lot, but the more I use it, the more I'm finding it lacks the more nuanced explanations I'm looking for as a CFL teacher. Any suggestions?

Try "Yufa!" by Wen Hua Teng published by Hodder Education ISBN 978 1 444 10913 9.

It has lots of examples and highlights the differences between Mandarin and English. It also has free online exercises.

Check this site out, they have a list of textbooks for further reference on the front page, but the site itself is pretty detailed.

I've got both of those.

Whjat you want is Chinese: A Comprehensive Grammar, by Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington.

I think that Wiki list, on the second page, only has their basic grammar. You want the comprehensive one.

This is a UK book and just has simplified characters.

The great thing about Claudia Ross is that she has over half on usage, which is good, but the grammar section is therefore smaller.
As for Yufa!, it is more of a learner's book with exercises. Also excellent. Btw, Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington also have two books of grammar exercises, basic and intermediate, with a key.

I found that Ross is poorly indexed and that her explanations were not always as clear as they might have been.

I agree that Chinese: A Comprehensive Grammar, by Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington is a very good book.

I very much like Yufa! but as a reference book I would agree that Chinese: A Comprehensive Grammar, by Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington is the better book.

Thanks everyone!

I'll order Chinese: A Comprehensive Grammar, by Yip Po-Ching and Don Rimmington when I get back to the states.

Do you know of any good reference I should get while I'm still in China? I'd hate to miss the opportunity.

If you go to http://www.purpleculture.net and search on grammar you will find a large number of books. Many of the entries come with sample pages. This might help in choosing.
