Is there a way to enter in alternate word definitions when creating vocabulary lists? Recently I tried to add:

正统[正統] zhèngtǒng authentic

and got:

正统 [-統] Zhèng Tǒng: (Ming emperor, 1427-1464) became Emperor at the age of eight. He was captured by the Mongols in 1449, released a year later and put under house-arrest for seven years by his brother. He re-seized the throne again by a palace coup.

which is pretty cool info, but not the right definition.

I know alternate definitions exists, because sometimes you get the ability to select. Is there a way to do this ourselves?

Yes, you can click on the definition (from the web version) and create a custom definition.

You can also change on the iOS version. Hit the definition (or the small down arrow) then hit the pencil button.

@Byzanti & Kellyl, I find that quite useful because I can copy in all the information from my ABC dictionary I have on Pleco. What I do is save it as a 'personal definition'.
