"Country-Code free"

Roland   August 1st, 2012 1:55a.m.

We are going to move apartment in Beijing during this month and I need to buy some items. I made already a vocabulary list for items to clarify with the landlord and other stuff to buy. It was great fun to discuss with the property agent on household appliances and in the shop about some home entertainment system.
However, there is one item which I don't know how to express in Chinese: I need to have a country-code free DVD player, as we have quite an amount of DVD's bought in China, Hong Kong, Europe and US. I asked a few Chinese friends, but they also didn't know (I think, they have no need for that, as they only buy in China the fake DVD's). Anybody who knows, how to express this in Chinese?
Thanks.

I think it's called 全区码.

pts, thanks, I tried to explain this to some people using "区码", but they thought about postal code and didn't understand me.
My feeling is, that 全区码 may refer to the all-country code used for DVD's itself, not for the DVD player.

The term for the DVD's itself is call 无区码。With some googling, you'll understand it.

learninglife, I did the same in Shanghai some years ago (we live in 2 locations, my wife works in Beijing, I'm in Shanghai) and yes, I could buy it, but even the guy in the shop couldn't tell me, what the expression for "country-Code free" is, same with some Chinese friends. So I am curious how to say it; anyway, I will try what pts said and then I will see.

Searching for these words 区码, 全区码 again today and noticed an interesting phenomenon. It seems that nearly all the articles containing these words were written before 2009. After 2009, the problem seems to have vanished and no one in China cares about it anymore. I suppose that all DVD players sold in China after this date is country-code free.

Hi all, I've just found it in an user manual from Samsung, they call it:地区代号. Will try it out next weekend, when I'll go and buy this stuff.
