Skritter and Pleco - Simultaneously on the same iPad screen.

radiator   August 8th, 2012 7:12a.m.

This is really just an informal experiment where I look at different ways to visualize study material.

Specifically, I put together a personal blog post that shows Pleco and Skritter running on an iPad at the same time, on the same screen.

The gist of it is:
1 - it looks cool.
2 - It is not a supported configuration, not by anyone.

Thanks for that tips, I very much use both so this I absolutely will have to try out.

that is pretty neat... how to make an iPad look like a good old PC with a mess of Windows! too bad it only works on jail-broken iPads.

That's very cool, shrinking down iPad apps is quite a good use of the Retina display.

Quite handy for keeping a textbook PDF open alongside Skritter/Pleco too.

Interesting... didn't even know somebody had done a jailbreak hack for that. Should benefit considerably from the new screen sizes Apple is introducing this fall, since an app UI designed around a 7" tablet should be just about perfect for a split-screen configuration (if you've got reasonably dextrous fingers at least).

We've been playing around with the idea of doing a split-screen dictionary + web browser mode in Pleco - expanding on our current web page reading function - so if Skritter eventually adapts their website for HTML5 it might actually be possible to get something a bit like this without jailbreaking. (though there are some very good reasons for them to wait a few years on that)

Well via non-jailbreak, I think it is technically possible to run Skritter on one device and have it communicate to Pleco on another.

For example, if I'm on an iPod or iPhone using Skritter. I do the lookup and it looks it up on my iPad. So anyone with dual devices would be able to do this.

There are some hacks for this now, but last I tried, they are not well implemented.

@all here..

Which Pleco bundle you guys use and which one do you recommend. Complete or pick and choose things needed?
I am a beginner to chinese on self study and wish to master at read websites in mandarin.

Mandarinboy   August 11th, 2012 7:12a.m.

I use the complete bundle. I actually do recommend that to everyone, even beginners. My reasoning is that you eventually will be advanced enough to find that Tuttle is not enough. You will need the more advanced dictionaries as well. If the price is to high do at least try to get the professional bundle. Those extra dictionaries do make wonders to your learning. Well, that is just my thoughts. For prices and content:

Sandeep, I fully agree with Mandarinboy that you should get the complete bundle. But I believe you will not grow into it, you will need it from the start. Here is why.

Originally I bought one or two dictionaries and was very frustrated. I ran into situations where I could not find the word or phrase - it was only like 2% or 3% of the time, but that was still way to often. When you need to find a word, you need to find a word.

So now I have pretty much all but 21st Century Dict (and will probably buy that at some point).
