iPad Landscape App

danisovic   August 15th, 2012 10:35a.m.

Do you have any plans to update your current iOS app to a native landscape iPad app?

nick   August 15th, 2012 2:36p.m.

Making the full iPad app is one of the things at the top of our TODO list, although we haven't figured out whether the design will be portrait, landscape, or both yet.

lechuan   August 15th, 2012 4:16p.m.

If possible, please keep portrait mode in the iPad app. It's much more comfortable when holding the iPad from the side with one hand. I don't object to landscape, but hope to see portrait remain.

MikkelJ   August 15th, 2012 7:01p.m.

Me too. Both would be best.

And hope to see a way to add words to Skritter as well as a way to study starred words via the app, that would be swell...

I would ask that the writing area not be too big. The 1x size on the iPad3 right now is just about right. The 2x size is too big.

Also it would be great if the actual writing area to be move-able on the screen. Currently I'm using a pen and I'm seeing a 2 inch x 2 inch square dull spot building up in the middle of the ipad screen that is hard to wipe clean. If the writing area can be moved around I hope it can spread the dullness around the screen.

I remember reading a Microsoft blog on the development of the Windows 8 virtual keyboard.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/07/17/designing-the-windows-8-touch-keyboard.aspx

In the blog they mention there are 3 main ways people used the keyboard (traditional, split, hunt and peck) people continually change while typing without settling on one.

So I think it would be best to include both layouts (and possibly a reverse for left hand people, or total customization like in Street fighter 4). I would also like to have an in app screen lock so the iPad won't change layouts if I decide to Skritter sideways while laying down on my couch or bed.

I would request that the writing area be as big as it is now. I use fingers, which is quite a "fat" way of writing and needs the space.

Byzanti   August 16th, 2012 7:28p.m.

A thinner way of writing would to not use fingers or a pen at all. We could have an alternate control system using the accelerometer. It would be like Etch-A-Sketch. You'd have to avoid hitting people with the ipad when you're waving it in the air trying to get the hook of 力, but everyone will be mega impressed when you succeed.

nick   August 17th, 2012 4:07p.m.

And so Byzanti inadvertently caused all further Skritter development progress to halt as Nick gave in to the temptation to try out Etch-A-Sketch Accelerometer Skritter.

Byzanti   August 17th, 2012 5:31p.m.

Hooray!

snowcreature99   August 18th, 2012 11:52p.m.

I mostly use the iOS app on my iPad - and honestly think it works great as is. Just a little cleanup needed around managing lists, etc.

Please don't shrink the writing area too much, whatever you do.

I'm learning both simplified and traditional - and the big writing area on the iPad makes traditional characters a breeze. With the iPhone it can be difficult.

Pat Jack   December 19th, 2012 4:21p.m.

Accelerometer, LOL ... perhaps a traditional Chinese dance routine, or Gangnam style video?

CC   December 20th, 2012 2:41a.m.

Maybe we could have a link straight into our brains, so we think of the character and it appears on screen? :) Only joking, of course. I'm still trying to envisage etch-a-sketch style character writing as I seem to remember curves were quite hard..... But I'm going back to a 1970s childhood, and maybe the technology improved with time.
