iPad v. iPhone

atdlouis   August 27th, 2012 9:12a.m.

I'm curious how using the app on the iPad compares to using the iPhone. I would think that the strokes would have to be too large on the iPad to be comfortable. Thoughts?

I think it is great. Even though I have to push the 2x button, it still scales up very well on the new iPad, and it is very pleasurable to use.

For comparison, I have used it on a PC with a Tablet, and also in my android phone. IPad is definitely the best, Tablet being 2nd, and my phone (Galaxy s2) in last place.

The iPad version is a joy to use. The large strokes feel natural both with a finger and a (large) stylus. I find the iPhone a bit cramped, especially when writing dense characters.

I find the iPad much easier as well. I barely use the app on my iPhone.

Love using on the iPad in 2x. Only use iPhone when I don't have the iPad with me.

It might depend on which character set you're learning. I imagine writing traditional characters on a small screen would be testing after a while.

I'm learning simplified, and find that the iPhone screen handles the job pretty well (even with characters as dense as 编辑 and 警察), although Skritter's a bit laggy on my iPhone 4. I use the iPad version quite a lot when I'm at home.

Edit: Today's update (v1.0.4) appears to have fixed the iPhone 4 lag.

I like both, but given the choice, I'll bust out the iPad and a stylus and hit the hammock. Something slightly smaller than the current iPad 2x size is what I'm thinking. Haven't gotten that design together yet.

I'm with Nick on this one. I find my iPhone is the go to for bus rides or on the go, but if I can relax a bit then I'll bust out the iPad. I also drool at the though of making good use of that extra screen size to increase the mobile experience even further.

I only have an iPad, but I use it in 1x size. I don't like the huge writing area (in 2x) because I don't like moving my arm so much to write. With the smaller 1x area, it feels more natural. Also, text doesn't scale nicely. When I click on the 'i' info button, the 2x text is so pixelated that it looks terrible. Sometimes I can't even tell what the tone mark is (in 1x or 2x).

I hope the iPad layout uses some of the extra screen space to include more of the features that we see in the website, especially the ability to see and add words which include a given character.

I use my iPad (in 2x mode) over iPhone 90% of the time when I am at home. The app is great on the iPhone (no lag that I have seen on the 4S) but I just find the big screen and flamboyant strokes more comfortable for long sessions.

I would be quite fine with the 'drawing' area being a bit smaller on the iPad native app though, to fit in other functionality. Hopefully the drawing area could be kept free of other controls too.

@Dependable Skeleton: you can improve the look of Skritter on your iPad by jail breaking and installing RetinaPad. What you are seeing now is a pixel doubled version of the iPhone 1/3G/3GS's resolution. With RetinaPad (or an iPad 3) you will see the app at the iPhone 4/4S's resolution. There was a thread about this a while back where I posted some screenshots to show the difference.

The Ipad (x2) version is VERY easy and comfortable to use. I love writing on it . I'm writing medium-sized strokes with my finger, so the app usually enlarges my strokes a little bit.

I did test the Ipad (x1) version which equals the writing space you have on an Iphone 4(s), and it works without any problems, too.

At home I'll be using the Ipad (x2) to skritter. But I don't see any reason why I wouldn't use the Iphone when I'm outside.

PS:
I plan on buying the new iphone (so called Iphone 5), so I hope the skritter app works with the ~4" screen. Maybe black bars on top and bottom, or even a dedicated Iphone 5 app coming? ^^
