I love Skritter more than anything, but I have to say that this app crashes A LOT.

Pretty much every time I use Skritter on my iPod Touch (4th generation), it crashes. I then re-open the app and start again. Within 5 to 10 minutes, it will inevitably crash again.

Is this a common problem with other users, or is it a problem with my iPod? I keep it clean, close out of apps often, and don't have the memory maxed.

Please help, as I would love to get the full potential of Skritter without it crashing every 5 minutes.

I'm not sure if it'll help you out, but I can tell you a little about my experience with it. I also have a 4th generation iPod touch. It was only purchased with the intention of using Skritter, but I've also installed Dropbox, Pleco and Google Translate. It also has some music on it as I was also intending for it to replace my iPod nano, but I like my nano better.

If I open any other app while Skrittering there is a chance it'll crash (based on my experience). Now I only use it to Skritter and my Android device for everything. It hasn't crashed in over a month. I realize that's not an option for some people who use it as a primary device though.

In general I'm disappointed with my iPod Touch non-Skritter experience. I can accomplish the same tasks on my Android device faster and with less clicking.

I used to run on a 4:th gen and had the same problems, constant crashes. This seems to much depending on how much data i had on my lists etc. Killing all other apps made it better but not perfect. It probably had something to do with my many lists and maybe big back log that I had at the time. I switched to a 5:th gen two month ago and have not had one single crash after this. Seems there is less internal memory in the previous versions that can't handle this properly. I have a very similar problem on the first gen Ipad as well.

Crashes are a problem with the iPod touch 4th generation (but not with other Apple devices, as far as I understand). For me it usually happens when I switch back and forth between Skritter and Pleco.

Skritter also crashes on my first generation iPad. It usually only crashes within a few seconds of switching back from Pleco, or after waking the iPad. I just got into the habit of force quiting the app and restarting whenever I wake up the iPad. This has the added benefit of updating the items due faster.

Three different mentions of Pleco in this thread make me a little worried... can any of you comment on whether Pleco seems to still be running along happily in the background when you reopen it after the crash? (i.e., if you open it after that does it start up quickly / return to precisely where you were before?) That might help clarify whether this is Skritter's fault or Pleco's - wouldn't want you blaming them for something that's actually our fault.

That being said, the iPod 4th-gen and iPad 1st-gen are the two most memory-starved Apple devices that are still in circulation (they only have 256 MB, everybody else has 512 except for the iPhone 3GS which has a much smaller screen and so can get away with less), so it's also possible that all of this is simply the device choking on running too many programs at once.

The only reason I mention Pleco is that it's the only app other than Skritter that I ever use. I actually get far more crashes after waking the iPad than from switching back from Pleco. Pleco always opens back to the same spot from before.

I don't have much experience switching back to Pleco a second time. Usually I avoid switching as much as possible to avoid the crash. Also, I usually close the background apps because I think it might help my old iPad keep up with these modern apps.

I don't blame either app for the crash. I blame the hardware. I'll be upgrading in a few months.

@mikelove - I also think the problem is the lack of memory. I singled out Pleco because it's the only app I use while skrittering. Hopefully once we have example sentences in the Skritter app it won't be necessary to do that anymore, but at the moment I find the benefit of the example sentences in Pleco outweighs the annoyance of the crashes.

Yeah, it's definitely a memory problem with Skritter--depending on which words are loaded (how many characters are in them) and how many apps are open, there's just sometimes not enough memory on the iPad 1 and iPod touch 4th gen. We already cut it down as far as we could, but there's not much more we can do to conserve memory.

I always close out of all other applications before opening Skritter, but I do notice it crashes more when I switch back and forth from Pleco. I also like to copy sentences from Pleco and paste them into my Skritter definitions. Sometimes I can't even get back to Skritter from Pleco - it will crash as the transfer is taking place.

Anyway, now I know that it's the low memory of my iPod. I'll just have to suck it up until I upgrade to something with more memory.

Skritter Japanese has never crashed on my iPod Touch 4th generation.

I much prefer the 4th generation iPod Touch to the iPhone 5 for skritter as the 4th generation Touch is properly hand size. The iPad mini is the best of all though (once the device isn't going to fit in your hand properly, you have more options).

I am in exactly the same boat -I bought an ipod touch soley for skritter use and it crashes regularily. I only use it to skritter, use pleco and listen to music. I would say it wasn't pleco as it crashes as much when switching back and forth from the wifi settings and music player too.
