iOS Requests

Hello,

Big fan of skritter for iOS, but I'd like to ask for some requests.

First, I love the "dark" theme on the iPhone. Is it possible to add this to the ipad version in a future update? The sounds and colors are very appealing, and every little detail can add to keeping one motivated while studying.

Second, is it possible to make a general counter for characters/words known? Just somewhere in the progress you can check to see how many characters you know. "xxxx characters known" would suffice. I know this would be a VERY rough estimate, but it would be great to see this. Learning Chinese, people often ask me how many characters I know. It'd be nice to give them a rough estimate. This could easily be counted, I think. Whichever characters/words are fully green from the W, T, P, D found be added to characters known.

Just a thought. Would be very happy to see these features added in a future update.

They have already said the dark theme will not be available for the ipad app.

You can already check your learnt characters/words in the progress section or by clicking on your name in the forum.

Hi,
adding the the dark theme to ipad is something the developers aren't going to do apparently, see this post http://www.skritter.com/forum/topic?id=239589112
and this one http://www.skritter.com/forum/topic?id=235677239

It seems there responses for things like Android app, landscape mode, and dark mode for iPad is that it takes too much time to implement and they want to focus more on bug fixing and the web version.

It makes me wonder what the current percentage of skitter platform usage is. I think obviously with Skritter being a web only app and designed for Wacom support the majority of its users and likely the oldest use the web app. However, I think with huge market share and affordability of iOS/Android phones and tablets the switch is going to be more on touchscreen devices. Making a singular focus on the web app maybe not all important if it isn't a universal platform. Especially with the interest in learning Chinese becoming more widespread and mainstream appealing.

I dunno, I think I'm just sour knowing that a $15/a month app's developers aren't willing to further consider understandable requests of features. Especially since their development team and support are very hands on and responsive else wise with their user-base.

This is also really a nod at how great their bug hunting has been and how stable their newest releases are. I've practically never ran into a bug, let alone a serious one on either platform, which makes the only annoyances the mismatching features.

We've seen a lot of usage go to the iOS app, especially on iPad, since as you point out, the mobile platforms are very appealing for Skritter. It's not that there isn't enough demand for an Android version, just that there isn't enough supply (development time).

The dark theme would cost hundreds of hours of work to do another version of the dark theme textures in a larger size, partially because the textures we used the first time aren't big enough. I know aesthetics are important, but this can't be a high priority for us.

I'd be quite happy with the iPad dark theme and the old iPhone low resolution textures (or none at all- just a dark background) - they looked fine when I was using an expanded iPhone app on the iPad. The things I really don't like about the light theme are the way the strokes 'bleed', and the awful "what's the pinyin" font - the fact that the dark theme is darker is just a bonus :)

I don't think spending hundreds of hours on any of the textures is worthwhile- some people have commented that they would prefer no textures at all.

For every person who comments on the forum saying they'd prefer having no textures or pixellated textures, there are ten people who would email us thinking it's a bug and two hundred people who would think that but never say anything to us about it. Tastes are all over the place on aesthetics, but things have to look complete.
