Poll Discussion: Word Info Correctness Trigger

Evan   March 31st, 2013 3:03p.m.

Do you think that a word should be automatically marked wrong if someone views the detailed word information viewer (the "i" or magnifying glass in the corner on iOS and web versions, respectively) before they've written the word in question? This might make sense, considering that the characters are already revealed to the user at this point. They would, of course, still be able to toggle it back to correct afterward if they wanted to. It might be the case that most users who do this already know the characters, and just want to check out more detailed info before moving on, so we only want to implement auto-incorrect if people are mostly using this method to cheat!

Hi Evan,

I think as adults we should be able to decide ourselves whether we want to 'cheat'.

夏普本   March 31st, 2013 4:43p.m.

I don't think this is really a problem, but I would like to see words marked incorrectly automatically wrong if you need any hint of the character. For example have to view the first stroke.

I don't think it's about being an adult but its much easier to mark something correct if your sure that you deserved it than it is to change something to incorrect if your not sure you didn't know.

Prefer not - I seem to get the next word's info screen a fair bit when I actually want the info screen for the preceeding word. Marking it wrong wouldn't help. Actually, on that note, it would be nice if the info button only updated to the new word once the new word had fully transitioned.

Also, as Zeppa said.

Auto-wrong in this case seems to ahead in the polls, but we still have relatively few votes in at the moment. You've all made very compelling arguments for leaving the user responsible for marking it wrong if they use the info screen to cheat; so regardless of how the poll ends up, I can't imagine us changing this unless we get some really good reasons to do so.

IMHO, revealing an answer before finishing a question = cheating.
However that would mean if you wanted to view the "i" screen, it would require navigating backwards since the last character auto advances to the next prompt. Maybe seems like a win-lose on either side.

Prefer to mark my own wrong/right. I sometimes look for various reasons after making a decision.

I would like to see an option to mark characters as so-so or wrong if I have to check the mnemonics for the character. At first, I manually marked characters I needed mnemonics for, but it became very tiresome very quickly. Because of this, I'm not studying kanji that I don't completely know yet as they're pushed farther back into the SRS.

I don't mind tweaks to the auto-mark settings. I am used to overriding them whenever I need to.
