This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

The character is actually correct, I believe, it has to do with the font being used.

I've seen other characters like that which look distinctively different depending on the font.

Yes, that character is an alternate version of 真. You can see it used in the lyrics at KTV sometimes. ^^

Right, so the font it's picking is displaying it that way. If it bothers you, you can try another font. There are a handful of characters that will display weirdly for most of the fonts that look like that. Fonts named like "KaiTi" will usually be good, though.
