Feature Request: display alternate writing

smikes   July 19th, 2013 12:43p.m.

In the iOS app, it would be great to be able to see alternate writings for characters when studying. I'm learning to write traditional characters, but would like to be able to at least recognize the simplified form as well. It would be great if there was an option to just display the alternate form of a character somewhere off in the corner in a smaller font.

It might be a nice feature to add, but there often isn't space to display the alternate form, so we haven't included that in the design. Have you tried tapping the info button to flip the characters over? That can show you the simplified form next to the traditional when desired, although it's not present on the front side with every prompt.

Nick, what about the space on the wood background below the example sentence and above the writing pad? When the character writing is complete it could show up there, in the same size font as the definition on the top. Or can you not display text in that area?

I did know about the info button, but I'm sure you realize that's not a very efficient solution.

Are you think about this on the iPad app? There usually isn't much space there on the iPhone/iPod layout, and even on the iPad you can't always rely on space there in case the definition and/or sentence is long.

In general, in order to keep the design on the iOS app simpler, we try to include only necessary elements on the front side, leaving the extra details for the back, so that it doesn't get as cluttered as our web interface (or worse).

I still wish we get bigger buttons on the ipad version one day... currently they are more like for Windows and not really tablet/smartphone size. Especially on the ipad I really *do* think there would be enough space to at least get some bigger buttons which are easier to hit.
