Shifty mnemonics

legypse   July 25th, 2013 11:19p.m.

Hello,

I've noticed an annoying issue on my skritter app. Let me explain.
It occurs when I write a mnemonic for a word composed by 2 characters, let's take this example of 鸡蛋... I like to write a mnemonic for the entire word only when skritter asks me the definition or the pinyin. So when it asks me pinyin or definition I will write only 1 mnemonic for 鸡蛋。 But for the writing I like to have 1 mnemonic for each character of the word, so in this example I would have 1 for 鸡 and 1 for 蛋。
Sometimes it works, but sometimes I can't do that because when skritter asks me for the writing, and I click on mnemonic, it's not split anymore for some words so instead of having 2 mnemonics (1 for each characters) I have only one... Do you get me ?? I'm sorry it is very difficult to explain it clearly like that.
Could you please tell me what should I do ?
Thank you

Legypse

The way that it works on the web app is that you can have separate char- and word-level mnemonics, but on the iOS app, since we don't really have space in the interface and since very few people use ended up using the word-level mnemonics feature, we only allow you see/edit the char-level mnemonics during writing and tone prompts. But to support people who already used word-level mnemonics, we made it so that it switches to showing the word-level mnemonic if one already exists for those writing and tone prompts.

So yeah, in your case, it wouldn't allow you to do both styles: depending on whether you make the word-level mnemonic on the definition or pinyin prompts, you won't see the char-level mnemonic option any more on writing and tone prompts. Hope this makes sense. Not sure of an easy improvement we can add for this situation, since we don't want to add more buttons or fields. What do you think?

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your answer.
I think it's a pity. That's the only drawback I've encountered so far, I'd like to be able to keep my char-level mnemonics which I find very useful...

If you don't want to add another button or field such as another pencil for instance, I also think that the mnemonics should be on word-level only when it comes to pinyin and definition and then on char-level only for writing.
That's what I'd suggest. Thank you.

Can I continue to create word level mnemonics in the web site and expect to see them in the app?

podster, yes: I think we'll leave it the way it is, where you can see the existing word-level mnemonics if already created.

Ok then I have to avoid adding word-level mnemonics because it seems to erase all the previous char-level ones I created.... Is that it ? Do you have another suggestion ?
If it's the only way for me to keep my char-level mnemonics it's a bit dodgy...

I use char mnemonics all the time and miss them on the app. It'd be handy to just click on the character and have the information window for that character pop up.
