Can't start skritter on iOS 7

swimming   September 22nd, 2013 11:59a.m.

I just upgraded my iPad 2 to iOS 7. I updated skritter to the latest version through the app store. (A blue dot was shown below the skritter icon.) Unfortunately, I cannot start skritter! When I "click" on the skritter icon, the icon becomes darker for a few seconds, but nothing else happens. I tried deleting skritter and reinstalling it. Unfortunately, I still cannot start skritter.

Any ideas on what I can do to solve problem?

Is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

I hope there is a quick fix as I am not sure how long I would be able to survive without skritter :-)

nick   September 22nd, 2013 12:47p.m.

Hmm; I don't know what could be causing that yet. Do you have any crash logs you could send me?

If synced with iTunes:

If synced with iCloud, this might work:

Also, try going to the iOS settings app and disabling the "Synchronize Skritter reviews in the background" option to see if that helps you start it (worked for one user). Let me know.

swimming   September 22nd, 2013 3:46p.m.

Good news!

I restarted my iPad and can now use skritter.

(I should have thought about it earlier... Usually I associate this course of action with Windows, not iOS.)

Nick: Sorry for disturbing your weekend. I will try to see if I can obtain the crash logs, if they are still available.

mratranslate   September 22nd, 2013 5:36p.m.

don't think I've ever seen anyone with more words than you swimming!

Amitabha   September 22nd, 2013 8:00p.m.

I thought xiaomai5 was suggesting that swimming was being verbose, which I thought was completely unfair. Then I clicked on the name out of curiosity to see if you really would "die" without Skritter.

Perhaps the physical manifestations of withdrawal of such a psychological dependance could really kill. =) Congratulations on your tremendous effort.

@Swimming thats a target i can only dream of!!!

I was exaggerating a bit. I have recently went a whole month without skritting. (Well, I was in China at the time and had other means of practicing Chinese...)

Now that I am using the new version of skritter for iOS 7, I notice a few (minor) things.

First, the top bar with the clock at the top of the screen is no longer visible in study mode. Is there a way of making the clock visible again? It was useful to keep track of time in the "outside world".

Second, for characters that underwent simplification, I now see "Simp" at the lower left corner of the probe area. While it might be useful for those who study both simplified and traditional characters, I find it a bit distracting. (I guess I would quickly get used to it though.)

Third, for some reason I cannot see my daily progress. No numbers there at all there. (Is it related to the fact that I recalculated my progress a few days ago?)

Fourth, the web version and the iOS app don't agree on how many items are due. The web thinks that I have about 250 items due. On the app, on the other hand, essentially no items are due. As a consequence the app prompts really easy items, as well as new items. If I check the easy items in "My Words" before studying them on the app, I see that they were only supposed to be due in several years time...

Finally, as I already pointed out once before, it would be nice to have a more "Chinese" background in the study page. The current formaica background is a bit boring.

Overall, skritter is great!

P.S. How do I disable "Synchronize Skritter reviews in the background". I started the iOS setting app. I see a lot of my installed apps there, but not skritter.

Unprovincial   September 23rd, 2013 3:13p.m.

Blank space on the daily progress here as well!
Using the ipad mini and latest OS.

swimming   September 25th, 2013 3:46a.m.

Is the daily progress working for anyone using the new version for iOS 7?

俞翰森   September 25th, 2013 4:12a.m.

I have had a few strange numbers but after a recalculation I think I have the correct numbers. I had one day where my numbers dropped without having marked one single word as wrong. This is also corrected after the recalculation.

nick   September 25th, 2013 11:42p.m.

The daily progress is busted on iPads, it's true. I'll be getting that fix out with the next update.

I think to correct the mismatch between the web version and iOS version (perhaps due to some oddity in the update), you might want to do a Clear Local Data. However, you might also not want to, since with that many words, it's bound to take a long time.

DependableSkeleton   September 26th, 2013 12:43a.m.

I agree with swimming's first point: I'd like to see the clock/wifi/battery status bar at the top of the screen.

Was this an intentional change?

ジェレミー (Jeremy)   September 28th, 2013 1:07p.m.

I was trying to figure out a way to hide that bar before the update rolled out, and am pleased to see it's gone in 2.3.0! You can long press for Siri and say 今何時? or the equivalent Chinese. (Kidding...)

swimming   September 28th, 2013 2:48p.m.

I very much hope that the clock/wifi/battery status bar would be back in the next version for iPad. I found it very useful. Essentially all iPad apps that I use have this bar. Why should skritter be different?

No one would object, I think, to an option to hide the clock/wifi/battery status bar, but I am not sure how many people would find it useful either.

Any thoughts about the "Simp" indicator that shows up for characters that underwent simplification? Is anyone finding it useful? I just find it distracting. Also, it sometime overlaps the definitions or the example sentences which is a bit annoying.

Christian   October 8th, 2013 11:22a.m.

Hi Nick, I'm getting crashes on iOS 7/iPhone 4, too. I need to close all apps, and then try to start Skritter 4 or 5 times before I succeed. Will send you the crash reports.

nick   October 8th, 2013 4:52p.m.

I just put the status bar back into the iPad version, so that'll be in the next update. I also fixed the simp/trad indicators showing up unnecessarily and the iPad daily progress tables. (I'm sitting in an Apple tech talk session and fixing bugs is more interesting than the talks.)

Thanks for the crash reports, Christian. I'll check it out. I haven't heard of anyone else still having the issue after a while using iOS 7, but I guess it's still a problem.

Roland   October 9th, 2013 4:04a.m.

For me too on iPhone, iOS7. It crashes already during update/sync.
2 weeks ago, it crashed during downloading, after 60 - 200 items, now it's crashing already at the beginning of sync.

swimming   October 9th, 2013 4:51a.m.

Nick, I am glad to hear you managed to do the corrections. When will the new update be released? If I understand correctly, it will be updated automatically on iOS 7?

DependableSkeleton   October 9th, 2013 9:11p.m.

Nick, will the status bar be back in the iPhone version too? Was it intentional to remove it?

nick   October 10th, 2013 12:33p.m.

Roland, do you have any crash logs for that crash you could send me?

swimming, I was going to release it this month on the 15th, but recently we were able to include new sound files and a couple other new things that are taking longer to process, so I'm holding off submitting an update until those are in.

DependableSkeleton, I haven't put the status bar back for the 4" iPhones, no--I was liking the extra space now that the sentences are in there making things taller. It's something we could change our minds on, though.

DependableSkeleton   October 10th, 2013 10:52p.m.

nick, I really would like the status bar back on the iPhone. To be honest, I find it far more useful than the example sentences.

Roland   October 11th, 2013 2:18a.m.

Nick, I am on OS X 10.8.5 and I had synced my iPhone, but under library/logs I do not have any folder crashreporter. Is it now in another folder or do I not have any crash reports?

nick   October 13th, 2013 1:40p.m.

DependableSkeleton, haha, that xkcd is great. Let me see what I can do; I'll need some new textures.

Roland--is it synced with iTunes or iCloud? What about this method?

http://www.cimgf.com/2013/04/26/ios-crash-logs-on-icloud-synced-devices/

Roland   October 14th, 2013 12:31a.m.

Thanks, just send you one crash report out of many.

ricksh   October 15th, 2013 9:54a.m.

Definitely +1 to DependableSkeleton's request for the status bar back on ipod/iphone app - clock and battery status are pretty essential I think. Wouldn't want to lose the example sentences for it though! Wasted a lot of valuable skritter time going through a load of xkcd stuff just now too ;) ...
