Ipad mini Ios7 app crashing

AWoolston   November 19th, 2013 11:08p.m.

Hi guys

I've been using skritter for around 5 months now and not found any problems, it's a great software. However, recently I updated my ipad mini to ios 7 and I've been finding that it just crashes constantly. I'm studying a word list for 30seconds and then it crashes to the home screen. I've updated skritter to the newest release, reinstalled the word list (remembering traditional Hanzi standard list), rebooted the device and still have the same issue. I've even tried banning words that it might crash on, but it just happens to later ones. Is anybody else finding this?

I was having a similar problem with the search function on a youtube app after the ios upgrade, but since I updated that app it's been fixed. So I'm wondering whether this is a problem that just hasn't been fixed on the Skritter app yet, or if it's a specific problem with my device. Any suggestions?

Luckily I don't have these issues and I'm also on the latest versions of the ios and Skritter. Hope you can somehow resolve it.

I have also used Skritter on iPad mini under iOS 7 (albeit not extensively) without crashes. Good luck. There is an incremental upgrade to iOS 7 out in the past few days, FYI.

Have you tried deleting the Skritter app, and reinstalling it? Might be something funny with your local data.

AWoolston   November 20th, 2013 10:55a.m.

Thanks for the responses.

podster: I think it must have been the incremental upgrade which has caused the problem. It has been working fine up until the last couple of days when I installed it.

lechuan: Yes, I've tried reinstalling a couple of times, I still seem to have the same problem. I just open the app now and it closes within a few seconds. I guess since others have not experienced the same it must just be a problem on my device.

I am also having this problem. I emailed the folks at Skritter about it and they've been reasonably responsive but nothing concrete yet. It happens often, but not exclusively, during the initial sync, which doesn't complete without crashing after reinstall.

After several tries I'm sometimes able to get the inital sync to finish (very, very slowly for no apparent reason) but then it will crash a few minutes into review.

I have gone so far as to wipe the ipad and reinstall everything; still doesn't help. I have IOS 7.04, the very latest.

Edit: I should add that I, too, am studying the H&R Remembering the Hanzi (although I'm studying Simplified) -- maybe there's some data glitch of some sort in there?

AWoolston   November 20th, 2013 9:36p.m.

Sounds the same as mine, with each initial sync taking a long time. I guess it may be a problem in the RTH word lists, perhaps the Heisig keywords. My next step might be to start again with a different word list and see how it goes.

I've been trying to reproduce this without any luck so far. I got the stack traces you sent, but they're unfortunately not too helpful in pinpointing the problem.

Can you guys study on the web version for a few days and then try again on iOS and let me know if you get any further?

AWoolston   November 22nd, 2013 11:43p.m.

Thanks Nick, I actually deleted all of my characters and started adding one by one from the remembering traditional hanzi list until I got the problem. I found the character [銘 míng: inscribe; engrave] was causing the problem for me. When this character is unblocked, the app takes a long time to sync and crashes soon after. There may be others that will cause the problem later, but for now with this character blocked the app is working fine.

harryarthur   November 23rd, 2013 3:38p.m.

奖 jiang (bonus) is the character that is currently causing my crashing, but like AWoolston said, there are many that cause crashes.

Have been using the web version for the past few days; it doesn't seem to help.

nick   November 23rd, 2013 4:53p.m.

Thanks for tracking that one down, AWoolston. I've fixed the sentence for that word, which was corrupt in a new way. I'll see what I can do to prevent further bad sentences from gumming up the works like this. Sorry for all the bugs!

harryarthur, I don't see anything wrong with 奖 or its sentence, but it's possible that the characters you see before the crash are actually just before the one that would cause the crash. Can you give it another shot and let me know if my fix for 銘 had any effect?

goobybear   November 23rd, 2013 10:55p.m.

I've been running into problems recently. I don't know whether it is device related. I have an ipad 3 on ios 7 with latest version of tthe app and it runs fine. But on my shiny new iphone 5s it crashed twice. Closing the app does not help. I have to delete it and reinstall.
Problem started a few days ago and happened again just now.

I don't know whether the following is a cause of the problem or just a coincidence. I always study simplified but several days ago put the study setting on traditional so that I can import some traditional characters into a custom list and export it out with pinyin and definition. I then put the setting back tio simplified. I never studied the custom list. So I don't know whether this temp switch from simplified to traditional and back has anything to do with the crash.

As for 铭 gumming up the works. I do recall studying this character prior to the second crash on iphone. This character was studied after Nick's message timestamp so maybe it is not fixed. It was studied in simplified. I do not recall whether I studied this prior to the first crash. I did not study this character on the ipad so maybe that is why ipad did not crash.

AWoolston   November 23rd, 2013 11:03p.m.

Cheers nick, seems to have solved it.

Harryarthur: It did look as though a few characters were causing the problem, but as nick says it is likely to be another that is about to appear that causes the crash. I just found that the crashes only happen when this character is unblocked. That now has been fixed on my list and the app is working fine with the character included. Just remember to clear the local data on the ipad for the changes to take effect.

harryarthur   November 24th, 2013 12:04p.m.

Doesn't seem to be crashing for me anymore, which is good. On the other hand, deleting and re-adding the remembering simp hanzi list seems to have wiped my progress, which is pretty annoying.

I'm also on iOS 7.0.4 on an iPad mini and I seem to get the "account corrupt" warning on a fairly regular basis (at least once every half hour?) I've only studied a little on this device, but after being obedient and reinstalling the app the first 3 times, it seems that ignoring the warning doesn't seem to affect much (if I keep studying, I can still sync). Is this a separate problem from what was reported before?
