Strange time reports

jpo   May 9th, 2009 11:56p.m.

Currently, the text on the practice page that reports the time since last studying an item is looking a bit strange. I'm getting text like this:

30 hr 822%

I'm getting these for the times that are shown under both the tones and the characters themselves. Page is working fine, just looks a bit odd.

This is with Chrome 1.0.154.59, if that makes any difference.

I guess that means it was meant to be reviewed after 4 hours or so but you're only being tested on it 30 hrs later. It's more like "26 hours overdue" then. 822% means Skritter's pretty sure you've forgotten it I suppose, maybe you have a 1 in 8 chance to remember?

Élie   May 10th, 2009 6:51a.m.

I don't really get what this percentage is about. I get heaps of 103%, 115% or so, what does it all mean?

ximeng   May 10th, 2009 8:08a.m.

A review item should get reviewed when it's a 100% ready. If it's 103% ready when you review it you're reviewing slightly after Skritter thinks you should review it. Skritter bases estimate on its prediction of when you're 95% likely to remember something. That's my understanding anyway.

scott   May 10th, 2009 8:57a.m.

Yep, that's correct. If an item is scheduled 24 hours after you last saw it, and you see it in 12 hours, then it's 50% ready. If it's been 2 days since you last saw it, it's 200% ready. This is how we calculate the 'age' of a given item, and sort them in importance. This way items that you know less well grow in importance more quickly than things you know well.

So Elie, that's good that your items are coming in around 100%. That means you're studying items just about when they're supposed to be studied.

You can also hover your mouse over the text to get a more verbose version of the info. We've got to edit it a bit though because it actually gives you the character you're writing in the verbose text. Will fix that soon!

I'm also planning on adding Skritter's estimation of your chance of remembering to the info text. 822% probably corresponds to more than a 1/8 chance of remembering, but it depends on the item.

Chloe   May 10th, 2009 11:39a.m.

Scott, that makes more sense.

I still think it's easier to understand when you say "12.5% chance that you will remember this character" instead of 822%. The point of a % is to visualize how much of a whole, which makes more sense to count from 0-100 if you haven't remembered something 100% yet. The scheduling % that are higher than 100% makes sense because it's more than the spaced time.

ximeng   May 10th, 2009 2:38p.m.

"You forgot the writing of this word 7 days ago, so it's now 86925% ready."

Skritter doesn't fancy my chances on this one...

nick   May 10th, 2009 3:33p.m.

The chance to remember isn't actually 1/readiness. It is much higher than that. I've been poking around and we don't have a good way of displaying your chance of getting it right. Perhaps we will later, when we revamp the scheduling system based on collected data.

A lot of words will have 10-30 minute intervals after you get them wrong, which means that after a day or two it'll be more than 10,000% ready. It doesn't mean too much after that point, which is why I capped the normal display at 999%. Is it too confusing to have the raw number above 999% there? I can take it out and just say, "It's very overdue for review, but scheduling isn't precise for short intervals."

ximeng   May 10th, 2009 5:01p.m.

The more stats the better for me. I like this new feature, and don't mind having raw numbers.

ZachH   May 13th, 2009 8:38a.m.

The current stats are good. The timeliness of the review is the most relevant figure when trying to optimise studying.
