Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

Appspot problems?

Hey Skritter team,

First major bug/downtime that I have encountered... for about the last ~3 days I haven't been able to use Skritter at all... if I go to the practice page I get anything from "the server is not responding" error page to an almost loaded app with some or all of the buttons beneath the character drawing area missing, one time I was even able to write a couple characters without the buttons but I gave up after a couple.

I tried on Firefox 3 and 3.5(beta), and my guess is it is something to do with the fact that I am inside of the PRC. Let me know if you need more info, and I will try on another computer and internet connection sometime to try to reproduce.

Peace.

It's working for me from Haikou, Hainan province. I'm using Chrome.

Hobbes828   May 17th, 2009 9:04a.m.

hmmm... working for me now as well.. same computer, os, browser. hopefully working for good :)

How's roughing it down in Hainan treating you? :)

p.s. my words now do barrel rolls. Either the skritter team or the Chinese government has a sense of humor.

LOVE Hainan. You should come visit! Pretty hot in summer though. Which began two months ago :o)

haha yeah i made a quick trip to sanya for 3 or 4 days around new years (Jan. 1, 2008). It was pretty sweet. Island seems nice and relaxed. I even got to surf while I was there, which was a good time.

Maybe I'll train down again in the fall or something, I like Chinese train rides (as long as you have a sleeper) and it's only about 10 hours from Guangzhou I think.

My GFW tests are inconsistent, but it looks like skrit.appspot.com is at least partially blocked at least part of the time from at least part of China, currently. So we're going to have to load all resources through the www.skritter.com gateway instead. This will make things a little slower, as it's one extra hop, but it should solve all GFW problems for the moment.

I'm uploading it as soon as Scott wakes up with my other bug fix.

I'm awake! I'm awake!

Also, if there have been days when you've been unable to practice due to things like this, let us know how many days there were and we'll credit you that many days, even if it's during trial days.

Hobbes828   May 18th, 2009 11:19a.m.

Good Monday morning to the Americans. who live in america still.

Yeah it is working smoothly again as of now, for me anyway. Worked after a couple tries yesterday i think.

About the crediting of days, 没什么事!I haven't paid anything yet so I don't really feel bad about it, and I passed my 听写 anyway :)

Of course after I start paying I'll probably start whining like that fourth grade kid who didn't want to go to PE, and everyone else was like, shut up, PE is the bomb. but he doesn't shut up, does he.

>>The bomb
This made me laugh, haven't heard this one for a long time.

murrayjames   May 18th, 2009 9:12p.m.

And what's with that kid anyway. He is *so* annoying.

Nicki   May 19th, 2009 7:15a.m.

How generous of you all to give extra days due to malfunctions. I suppose we don't get extra days for having the flu.

:o)

Shhh, don't tell anyone, I'm trying not to get quarantined while they test for h1n1...
