Also Add Characters When Adding Words

Aaron Dolman   December 23rd, 2010 1:32a.m.

I had similar issues a while back and have started to notice it again recently with the "Also Add Characters When Adding Words" setting.

I have this unitcked so it should not add the characters individually when learning words, however, I am in the process of trying to learn definitions and writing a tonne of cheng yu's (成语)and for some reason it has started to add words individually and it becomes a pain in the butt.

Has anyone else had the same problems?

Also is there anything the Skritter guys can do to check fi there is a bug here or if there is something in my settings that is causing this.

Thanks all

Can you give an example of some individual characters that were added and from which chengyu they were added? Then I can check these out more quickly and see what's going on.

It hasn't done it yet today but one i remeber was

两全其美 - the character 两 came up indivdually.

another one was 人 but I can't remember the word.

东 西 墙 all came up individually from the word 拆东墙补西墙

one thought i had but could be totally wrong is that it might be coming up on words that i added but i also added them to your dictionary when creating my own lists - if that is the case they might not follow rules that you have set for words already in your dictionary - but then again I don't have a clue.

thanks for the help.

Hey Nick

another one i just found was 黄 in 黄海 seems to be doing it - this is in my own created list.

have you been able to figure this out?

thanks

If I look at those items, the characters were all added from HSK 1-4, so they should be active independent of the chengyu you're studying. Currently, If you get those characters wrong in a chengyu without doing the trick where you manually mark the character right and the word wrong, they can come up again on their own. More info in this thread, which I haven't tackled yet:

Could that explain it?
