Beta testing free HTML5 flashcards app

Alan   January 5th, 2014 4:53a.m.

I'm testing a new free Android/iOS/desktop Hanzi study web app. It has cursive (joined up) writing and calligraphy, freehand hanzi drawing with undo and erase, character practice grids, and browing of history & queue at any time. More information on the beta is here: http://hskhsk.com/shanka

Interesting project--are you doing any stroke recognition with the cursive writing, or is it a write-then-self-check approach?

Alan   January 5th, 2014 1:55p.m.

No stroke recognition, too much work for me to do with cursive. Even replicating Skritter's stroke by stroke approach is too much work, so I avoid strokes entirely.

At the moment I give two options: draw freehand, or use the device's built in handwriting recognition (which works well for iOS and Android), and self-check.

The beta is now very stable on iOS, Android, Chome, Firefox, and (just about) IE11. I'd love to get some feedback from other Skritter users. Some info and screenshots here. http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/43282-beta-testing-new-free-chinese-flashcards-web-app/

make it easier to access - hskhsk.com and facebook.com are blocked in china, if you attached it to chinese-forums post or put your contact details on that post, would have exponential increase in testers!

screenshots look good

That's a good idea!I was trying to improve the stability on older devices (it now works on pretty much anything with an up-to-date web browser) and features to the point where it was worth expanding the testing pool. Here's the link:

http://shanka.hskhsk.com/beta1/

I tend to announce new features in that Facebook group, but I could do it another forum too if there are a lot of non-Facebook users.

I just added support for other languages, and a Spanish translation of the interface is under way. If anyone wants to see it in their own language and can lend a hand, get in touch!

I'm surprised to hear that hskhsk.com is blocked in China; I get lots of hits from all over China (according to Google Analytics), and services that test this kind of thing always tell me that it is fine: http://www.greatfirewallofchina.org/index.php?siteurl=hskhsk.com - if that's true though, I may have to host the app somewhere else...

@d Thanks for the heads-up by the way, it seems my hosting provider was blocked in China- I've moved things around so the site should be accessible there now. Cheers!
