shuffling example sentences

carlfordham   April 11th, 2011 12:13a.m.

Is there a way to rotate the example sentences when reviewing a word? I think an option like that would be quite useful and take advantage of all the great example usages in the Skritter database.

Yeah that would be a cool feature.

This has come up before - see this previous thread:

Another shuffling option I'd like to see (and forgive me if this has also been brought up already) is to shuffle the "other words using this character" list. When you hit the magnifying glass for a single character, you get a list of four words also using that character. They're always the same four words. Can we mix this up too?

@jcdoss Yeah, along those lines it would also be nice to have a way to show the list of all words (not just the top four) that contain the character. And for words, it would be nice to have a way to find the list of longer words that contain the given word.

I definitely like that the current setup shows only the top 4 most frequent (OK, not exactly, but close enough) words, so people don't get distracted by rare usages, but lots of characters have multiple meanings and many times the top four words only use one of those meanings.

We have it on our list to make it so you can page through those containing words. I think we will keep it in order of frequency, though, rather than shuffling. Also thinking about ways to get those into the prompt itself, rather than just in the word popup.
