Hacking Chinese 2014 Character Challenge

SkritterJake   March 18th, 2014 7:18p.m.

Olle is hosting another Sensible Character Challenge over on Hacking Chinese, and I'm curious how many Skritter users are going to participate. Details can be found here: http://www.hackingchinese.com/sensible-chinese-character-learning-revisited/

Post your goal below if you're planning on taking the 101 day plunge!

humalin   March 18th, 2014 9:23p.m.

*Updated to 1514 words in 100 days

Starting today 19.03.2014
Time Spent 294 hours
Characters 3210 learned
Words 7486 learned

Aiming to add 1514 words:

Milestone #1 (April 8th): 455
Milestone #2 (April 30th): 833
Milestone #3 (May 31st): 1213
End of challenge (June 30th): 1514

Goal
Total Words 9000

I'm preparing to compete for Mexico in the 汉语桥 (Chinese Bridge) this may.

安勇氣   March 18th, 2014 10:36p.m.

Damnit, you are so ambitious its contagious! I'll shoot for 1300 over 101 days.

TidusWulf   March 19th, 2014 12:55a.m.

Does this mean it has to be Chinese? I'm doing Japanese.

I still want to participate, however.

Is 1000 too low? I don't think my brain can work any harder than that (especially with regular life. I struggle to find the motivation, much less the time, to use skritter daily).

I'll commit to 1000 in Japanese if I can

jmatek   March 19th, 2014 1:54a.m.

Edit: I think my eyes were bigger than my stomach with that previous goal. Taking into account my other interests and responsibilities, I would like to change my goal for the challenge to 12 words a day over the 101 days for a total of 1212 new words by the end of the challenge

rinnymcphee   March 19th, 2014 3:02a.m.

I'm in too! I'll aim to learn another 1212 words in the challenge. Bring it! Here's my targets :)
Milestone #1 (April 8th): 396
Milestone #2 (April 30th): 660
Milestone #3 (May 31st): 960
End of challenge (June 30th): 1212

马洲屹   March 19th, 2014 4:55a.m.

I am in as well. Just to insert a competitive edge to this...I am going to go for 21 characters a day for the 101 days making 2121 new words learned ;-)

mratranslate   March 19th, 2014 5:33a.m.

Am in... Going realistic for me... Based on slow recent results.. 500 in 101 days

gua nö   March 19th, 2014 5:24p.m.

Gonna aim for 30 min per day and 11 new characters per hour, that gives a goal of 555.5 new characters, which we can round up to 600 to make it interesting ;)

Since Skritter seperates words learned and characters learned, should we specify a goal for both? Or is it just for characters as the name suggests?

Molndrake   March 20th, 2014 2:50a.m.

Hi everybody!

The details of the character challenge are now online, including what you need to post in order to participate (your goal and a few milestones along the way) as well as more information about the prizes on offer (free extensions from Skritter and posters from Hanzi WallChart). Read more and sign up here:

Aiming to add 1514 words:

Milestone #1 (April 8th): 455
Milestone #2 (April 30th): 833
Milestone #3 (May 31st): 1213
End of challenge (June 30th): 1514

SkritterJake   March 20th, 2014 12:27p.m.

It's awesome to see so many people interested in giving the challenge a try. Awesome!

I'm aiming to add 2500 words over the next 101 days from the TOCFL 2013 list that I'm studying right now. I have no idea how many characters that will be, but I'm sure it will be a lot. After nuking my account I'm sure that a lot of characters will be review for me, but the raw number of words I'm trying to add should make the goal fun and interesting.

My milestones are as follows:

Milestone #1 (April 8th): 750 words
Milestone #2 (April 30th): 1,375 words
Milestone #3 (May 31st): 2000 words
End of challenge (June 30th): 2500 words

SkritterJake   March 20th, 2014 12:28p.m.

@TidusWulf

I think the challenge should work okay with Japanese as well. Join in on the fun!

jmatek   March 20th, 2014 10:36p.m.

I like the idea of trying to learn new words every day consistently, and I have a tendency to rely on frenzied bursts rather than sustained effort, so my goal for the challenge will be to learn 12 new words a day for a pleasantly irregular total of 1212 new words by the end of the challenge. Most of these words will be words that I was first exposed to through other learning resources, namely ChinesePod, books, tv shows, etc., but I will also continue to add words from the HSK 6 list.

Update with concrete numbers for future reference~
Progress as of March 22, 2014 before the start of the challenge:
Hours learned: 200
Characters learned: 2384
Words learned: 3695
My milestones for the next 101 days:

Milestone #1 (April 8th):+364 words = 4059 words
Milestone #2 (April 30th): +667 words = 4362 words
Milestone #3 (May 31st): +970 words = 4665 words
End of Challenge (June 30th): +1212 words = 4907 words

Hi,
This is the goal I expect to reach by June 30th!!!

Milestone #1 (April 8th): 300
Milestone #2 (April 30th): 550
Milestone #3 (May 31st): 800
End of challenge (June 30th): 1000

Good luck!!!

Molndrake   March 22nd, 2014 10:42p.m.

It's amazing to see so many people interested in joining! I would just like to point out that to join the challenge, I would like people to sign up to the actual challenge as well (see link above). Of course, it's great to post and discuss here as well, but when it comes to signing up and reporting on the milestones, you need to post comments to the actual challenge as well, otherwise this will be an administrative nightmare for me (it might already be, but it will be worse). 謝謝!

thedrunkingpig   March 25th, 2014 9:02a.m.

yeah why not. wont sign up for the chinesehack site though. heres my goals:

as of March 25th: 913 words
1200 words
12 a day

Milestone #1 (April 8th): 1081
Milestone #2 (April 30th): 1441
Milestone #3 (May 31st): 1801
End of challenge (June 30th): 2113

think my maths might be off. if they are, hey ho.

baileemae   March 25th, 2014 9:42p.m.

I'm confused on keeping track of words. Does skiritter keep track of a total count of words learned or do you have to add up each day?

SkritterJake   March 26th, 2014 11:40a.m.

Hi baileemae,

Thanks for your question. Skritter keeps track of a lot of different things in the Progress Viewer, which can be found here: http://www.skritter.com/progress

You can toggle between weekly, monthly, and yearly progress, which should give you a pretty good picture of how many characters and words you're learning. You can also click the "totals" button in the upper right, and see how well you've done since signing up on Skritter (assuming you've been using for more than a year).

If you ever want to see how many characters/words etc. you've learned in a given day, just hover over the data points on any one of the graphs and it will so you the specific total of X for that given day if you ever want to crunch the numbers manually. For the purpose of the challenge, I think just leaving the Progres Viewer set to Weekly should keep you in the loop enough to adjust to challenge goals.

I hope that helps answer your question, and best of luck in the challenge!

maggieh   March 31st, 2014 12:08a.m.

Hallo I've joined up for this too.

I'm 'only' doing the 200 radicals. (Well, I will be still doing my daily amount of Skrittering of course too). But these radicals have been pissing me off for a while so I am going to use this challenge as a means to focus on them & get those weirdo, 3 side of a box, ones sorted out!

SkritterJake   March 31st, 2014 4:37p.m.

@maggieh, best of luck in the challenge. Knocking out those radicals is really going to help take your character learning ability to the next level. Best of luck with the usual skrittering and learning those 200 部首

一起加油!
