I continually have problems getting that stroke recognized by the system. It feels like a bug.

I'll add that report to my list of recognition problem strokes, to go over the next time I do a round of tuning. Can you describe a bit more about how you are trying to write it, where it isn't accepted, or how you need to write it for it to work?

I have been trying to record a video to demonstrate, but haven't been able to... It's a problem that really plays hide-and-seek with me.
Here I get it on the third try, but sometimes it's on the 10th try!

I also notice a bit of a problem with the same stroke here, the 8th stroke:

but it's not as bad.
I wish I knew how to write it so it works, but try as I might I can't find a way to please the program. I'd be happy to write it any way it wants me to, but I can't figure it out.

Ah, great! That screencast helps enormously; I think I know what the problem is (that stroke being too sensitive to wiggle at the beginning and ends of the stroke).

I'm not planning to do another round of tuning very soon, as it takes a long time, but when I do I should be able to get it fixed perfectly. Until then, try avoiding any wiggle on the end of that stroke--pick up the pen as you're still drawing downward so that the last few points recorded are all still going straight. That should do the trick until I get the fix in.

glad it helps. and thanks for the tips, they help a bit, especially picking up the pen earlier

one other small element that may be of help for tuning: often, when it recognizes that stroke, it displays the "stroke backward" message (adding insult to injury :-)), as in this video:
